The Green School brings students closer to nature. Dozens of young people go to visit the nature reserve at Tinovul Mohoș, from Harghita. Carnivorous plants have already flourished there. Many tourists come to the area just for them, to catch them in “action” when they capture insects. Basically, the children will have an hour of outdoor biology.

Dosa Levente, director of the reserve: Basically, here we see a taiga habitat. If we look, there are overlapping plant species, some relicts from the ice age.

The unique reservation, near Lake Saint Ana, attracts tourists from all corners of the world. The star of the place is a plant that has just bloomed, and now it can be admired in all its splendor.

Dosa Levente, reserve director: A carnivorous plant called Heaven’s Dew, which essentially uses a hybrid trap to catch insects and survive.

Miracle of nature

The plant feeds on insects even 15 or 20 times larger than itself, being lured with tentacles covered with drops of poisonous sap. In the protected area, tourists walk over a lake covered with a thick layer of peat, on a wooden path, which guides you as if in an enchanted land. Dozens of children, students of a high school in Iași, also wanted to visit this wonder of nature.

Cosmin Horechiu, teacher: We also chose to see peat mosses, in the case of Tinovului Mohoş. To the children’s delight, we also saw some carnivorous plant species.

Swamp turned into a tourist reserve

Specialists say that, in simple terms, Tinovul Mohoş is a special swamp that was born from a volcanic lake, following volcanic activity through Lake Sfânta Ana.

Prud Angina, teacher: It is a land, I could say fantastic, of fairy tales, amazing. With plants that we cannot find anywhere else in the country and even in Europe.

Dosa Levente, reservation director: We have duty guides, who start the shifts hour by hour, every quarter and a half.

The access fee to the reservation is 40 lei for each car. Includes an authorized guide and the descent to Lake Saint Anne.
