The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, declared that no new request can be submitted to the Greek authorities for the extradition of Sorin Oprescu.

Alina Gorghiu was asked, on Europa FM, if the former general mayor, who fled to Greece two years ago, before being sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison for taking bribes, can still be extradited. “I couldn’t answer you. I have to be very fair and dry in my answer. The procedure on certain fugitives mentioned over time many times in the public space was closed long before I became the Minister of Justice. Once the procedure is closed, you have nothing more to do with them. You can no longer submit a new application. As such, once the procedure is closed, everyone sees their own path”, said Gorghiu.

On May 13, 2022, Sorin Oprescu was found guilty of corruption in the case in which he is accused of receiving, in September 2015, at his residence in Ciolpani, 25,000 euros from his subordinate Bogdan Popa, former director of the Cemeteries Administration, money which would come from acts of corruption. The former general mayor of the Capital left Romania before the final sentence was announced. Oprescu was arrested on May 17, in Greece, four days after being prosecuted. On July 21, 2022, the Greek courts rejected Oprescu’s extradition to Romania, citing the poor detention conditions in our country.

Sorin Oprescu won in court the increase of the special pension

Sorin Oprescu, won in court the increase of the special pension! Fleeing to Greece after the sentence of 10 years and eight months of imprisonment received in the country, the former mayor lives a life of luxury in Greece, at the expense of the Romanians.

Even if a conviction for acts of corruption, Sorin Oprescu will again benefit from an increased pension, because he represented the Romanians in the Senate.

The court’s decision comes after 95 former elected officials sued the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, requesting the reinstatement of the election schedule, starting on July 1, 2023.

Thus, the former senator collects every month from the Romanian state an amount that the average Romanian can only dream of! If before the court’s decision he received 3,000 euros per month, now his income has increased by another 500 euros, according to realitatea.net.

Sorin Oprescu was tried in 2022 for acts of corruption, but he couldn’t wait to see what the court decides, so he left for Greece, where he is currently and from where it seems that he won’t be leaving anytime soon .
