Penny Pritzker discussed regional cooperation in Bucharest, including emergency energy assistance for Ukraine, but also the long-term benefits of infrastructure investments in the neighboring country at war with the Russian Federation.

Penny Pritzker, at the end of the meeting with Marcel Ciolacu, also went on a working visit to the Ukrainian refugee center within Romexpo created by UNHCR.

She was accompanied there by the US Ambassador in Bucharest, Her Excellency Kathleen Kavalec, Victoria Stoiciu from the Prime Minister’s Office who dealt with the integration of refugees, as well as the head of the IGSU Raed Arafat and Pablo Zapata, the UNHCR representative in Romania.

Penny Pritzker also held a short press conference in the Ukrainian refugee center in Bucharest, in which she declared that “Romania has until today offered help to millions of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, among which more than 70 thousand of them chose to stay and start a new life in our country.

“Furthermore, Romania sent fuel, energy and medical aid to Ukraine. Romania invested in its own infrastructure, in ports but also in railway infrastructure, things that are necessary when you have a war on the border.

“Your generosity helped Ukraine and at the same time strengthened it as a country, and now Romania is a regional leader on the eastern flank of NATO and the EU.

“Romania will have a lot to offer in the future as well, because it has a geostrategic and interesting location. And it can get involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war, because there are many American and Romanian companies in your country that are ready to invest in the reconstruction of the neighboring country affected by the war”.

Victoria Stoiciu, State Counselor in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, who is in charge of the program for Ukrainian refugees in Romania, also spoke at the event. She told Radio Romania News that the Government of Romania supports the refugees from our country but also a future involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war. Victoria Stoiciu also stated that today a family of Ukrainian refugees receives from the Romanian State an aid worth 2000 lei, money that is transferred only if the refugees look for work in our country and send their children to Romanian schools. If before the money was transferred to those from whom the refugees rented the apartments or houses where they lived, now the amount is transferred directly to the families of Ukrainian refugees. The representative of the Government wanted to specify that at the moment, there are approximately 70,000 Ukrainian refugees in Romania who work legally and have restarted a new life in our country.
