How are prices at the pump affected?

Fuel prices at filling stations follow a similar evolution to Platts international quotations for gasoline and diesel, with a difference of several days. The Platts quote is an international reference price in the petrol or diesel market, reflecting demand, supply and transactions between wholesale fuel traders.

Quotations are not public. In the long term, they tend to follow the same trend as oil barrel prices. Thus, when international Platts quotations rise, the pump price of fuels rises. When these quotes drop, gas station prices drop.

Most price adjustments at the pump are made within about a week of both rising and falling Platts international benchmark quotes.
