OLT: African swine fever in a commercial farm in Scornicesti. More than 11,000 animals slaughtered and dozens of localities in restricted areas

The Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) Olt announced that last week an outbreak of African swine fever was confirmed in pigs from a commercial holding. In the same farm, an outbreak of African swine fever occurred in the summer of 2021. The farm is located in the town of Negreni, in the city of Scornicesti, and the suspicion was confirmed on April 25, 2024 through an analysis bulletin issued by the Diagnostic and Health Institute Animal Bucharest.

“On 25.04.2024, the Olt Local Disease Control Center (CLCB) met at the Prefect’s Institution and approved the Plan of measures to combat African swine fever in the commercial pig farm in Negreni, Scornicesti city, Olt county, where it applies the measure of elimination of all pigs, namely a herd of 11,425 pigs, in accordance with the provisions of the sanitary and veterinary legislation in force.

The carcasses of the dead or killed pigs and all the materials in the premises of the holding will be destroyed under official supervision, in accordance with the legal provisions”, the DSVSA Olt representatives sent.

The ban on selling live animals in fairs is maintained

Following the confirmation of the ASF outbreak, several localities, as well as several hunting funds, were included in the protection zone: Scornicești-Negreni, Chițesca, Piscani, Mărgineni-Slobozia, FV 11 Potcoava, FB 8 Scornicești.
Even more localities are now in the surveillance area: Scornicești-Suica, Mogoșești, Rusciori, Constantinești, Teiuș, Bircii, Bălțăti, Jitaru, Mărgineni-Slobozia, Mihăilești Popești, Potcoava-Fălcoeni, Trufinești, Optași-magura, Sîrbii Măgura – Vitănești , Colonești-Guești, Mărunței, Bătăreni, Năvîrgeni Tătulesti, FV 10 Optași, FV 7 Priseaca, FV 12 Bălteni and FV 9 Tătulesti. The surveillance area also includes two commercial pig holdings from Constantinesti.
It is prohibited to trade, transfer or move in any form live pigs, meat and pork products from restricted areas. The restrictions regarding the organization of agglomerations of live animals for the purpose of their commercialization are also maintained (ban on the operation of live animal fairs), the DSVSA also transmits.

“DSVSA Olt requests the support and understanding of territorial administrative units, citizens and economic operators for compliance with these measures, considering the seriousness of the disease and the serious economic consequences generated by its occurrence.
To prevent the spread of the disease, all suspect animals must be slaughtered and neutered, and the owners will be compensated by the state, under the conditions provided by law.

We make it clear that African swine fever does not affect humans, there is not even the slightest risk of illness for humans, but this virus has an impact at the social level from an economic point of view”, DSVSA also transmitted.
