Outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Olt. More than 11,000 animals will be slaughtered

Almost 11,500 pigs from a farm in the village of Negreni, in the city of Scornicesti, will be eliminated after an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in that commercial holding, informed the representatives of the Veterinary Health and Safety Directorate

The analyzes carried out by the Bucharest Animal Health and Diagnostic Institute confirmed the outbreak of African swine fever at the farm in Negreni on April 25, when the Local Center for Combating Olt Diseases was also convened, which approved the plan of measures to eliminate all pigs, the destruction of animal carcasses and materials from the farm, Agerpres says.

“Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) Olt informs that an outbreak of African swine fever has been confirmed in pigs from a commercial holding in Negreni town, Scornicesti city, Olt county, based on the analysis bulletin issued on 25.04 .2024 by the Diagnostic and Animal Health Institute Bucharest. On 25.04.2024, the Olt Local Disease Control Center (CLCB) met at the Prefect’s Institution and approved the Plan of measures to combat African swine fever in the commercial pig farm in Negreni, Scornicesti city, Olt county, where applies the measure to eliminate all pigs, namely a herd of 11,425 pigs, in accordance with the provisions of the sanitary and veterinary legislation in force. The carcasses of the dead or killed pigs and all the materials in the premises of the holding will be destroyed under official supervision, in accordance with the legal provisions”, said the quoted source.

Authorities have also established surveillance protection zones for African swine fever. Thus, the protection zone including the villages of Negreni, Chițesca, Piscani, Mărgineni – Slobozia in the town of Scornicești and the hunting funds in the towns of Scornicești and Potcoava.

Also, the African swine fever surveillance area included the localities of Scornicești, Potcoava, Optași – Măgura, Colonești and Tătulești. Two commercial holdings from Constantinești (Scornicești) are also included in the surveillance area.

The DSVSA states that the sale of live pigs as well as pork and pork products from pigs in these localities is prohibited.

The spokesperson of DSVSA Olt, Venera Popa, specified that the elimination of pigs from the farm where the ASF outbreak was confirmed began on Friday and will be completed on Monday, and currently there are no more suspicions of illness in animals from other holdings or commercial farms or from households.

The Negreni farm where the ASF outbreak was confirmed faced another disease outbreak almost three years ago, in September 2021.
