The explosives were seized during a control of a shipment of icons and religious objects in the Pskov region (northwest), on the border between Russia and Latvia, the FSB said in a statement.

Under these conditions, the Russian security services state that they have thus put an end to the “cross-border trafficking of explosives from Ukraine through European Union countries”.

The same source shows that the explosives were transported to Russia on the following route: Ukraine – Romania – Hungary – Slovakia – Poland – Lithuania – Latvia.

As a result of the control, 27 improvised explosive devices, hidden in icons and ready for use, 70 kg of high explosive, industrial product, 91 electric detonators and components of an RPG-7 grenade launcher were confiscated.

A person suspected of being involved in this traffic was arrested, the press release also states, without providing any other details.

“All the organizers and accomplices of this crime, including foreign citizens, will be subject to a search warrant and will be prosecuted according to Russian law,” the FSB said.

In February, the Security Services of Georgia announced that they had found explosive devices in a van that had left Ukraine, transited Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, and was on its way to Russia.
