The Constanța Environmental Protection Agency reminds that, on March 19, 1902, the International Convention for the Protection of Agricultural Birds was signed in Paris, ratified in 1905 and entered into force on April 1, 1906. Since then, April 1 is celebrated International Bird Day.

The earth is home to about 50 billion birds, almost six times the number of people, according to an estimate made by scientists. The researchers concluded that there are relatively few common species and many rare species. Among the world’s 10 most widespread bird species are the house sparrow (1.6 billion), the starling (1.3 billion), the ringed gull (1.2 billion) and the swallow (1.1 billion). Of the approximately 10,000 bird species in the world, 10% are endangered. The avifauna of Romania includes about 454 species. Among the vulnerable bird species here, we mention: the common pelican and the curly pelican, the birch grouse, the steppe plover, the red-necked goose, the bustard, the little tern or the field eagle.

“But humans are unfortunately, through their irresponsible actions, the biggest threat to the welfare of birds.

So that future generations can still enjoy the presence, flight and song of birds, we must find the possibility to share, in balance, the same common living space. In the current period when climate change and habitat degradation threaten bird populations globally, it is more important than ever to get involved in the conservation and protection of these wonderful species”, the representatives of the Constanța Environmental Protection Agency sent.
