Premier Energy buys a new wind farm in Romania. The Spaniards from Iberdrola are withdrawing from the local market

The Premier Energy group, controlled by the Czech businessman Jiri Smejc, takes over the Mihai Viteazu wind farm, with a capacity of 80 MW, located in Constanța county. It is about the park owned by the Spanish company Iberdrola, which thus withdraws from the local market. The transaction, worth 88 million euros, is subject to standard regulatory approvals for this type of transaction in Romania.

In 2021, Profit.ro announced that the company Eolica Dobrogea SRL, a partner of the Spanish giant Iberdrola in several wind farm projects in Romania and which has been insolvent for 7 years, plans to obtain authorizations for the construction of an integrated energy complex of 500 MW , consisting of wind and natural gas energy production units, plus a hydrolysis facility for hydrogen generation, right in the “Mecca” of the Romanian wind industry, Cogealac commune in Constanța county.

In 2008, the spaniel giant Iberdrola announced that it had taken over 50 wind power plant projects in Dobrogea from Eolica, with a total installed capacity of 1,600 MW. Of these, only the one of the Mihai Viteazu wind farm in the Constanta commune of the same name, with a capacity of 80 MW, materialized.

“This strategic acquisition further strengthens Premier Energy’s commitment to leadership in sustainable energy production and virtually doubles its footprint in operating wind power assets. The wind farm has an estimated net production of 165 GWh per year”, is the message of the Premier Energy company.

The value of the transaction is 88 million euros and includes approximately 520,000 green certificates.

The Premier Energy Group, together with its subsidiary Alive Capital, is one of the largest players in the renewable energy segment, with an installed capacity of over 900 MW in ownership, management and development in Romania.

Prior to the acquisition, the wind farm was managed by Alive Capital.

This transition ensures seamless operational continuity and underscores Premier Energy’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of efficiency and performance.

The transaction is subject to standard regulatory approvals, including the approval of the Competition Council, and is expected to be completed this year.

Premier Energy operates three business segments: generation, management and supply of renewable energy together with its subsidiary Alive Capital; production, supply and distribution of electricity and supply and distribution of natural gas.

In April, Premier Energy completed the acquisition of CEZ Vânzare, now Premier Energy Furnizare, consolidating its regional portfolio to 2.4 million residential and non-residential customers.

Premier Energy is a distributor and supplier of natural gas for residential and non-residential consumers, operating a gas distribution network of over 3,600 km in several counties in Romania.

At the same time, according to a press release from Iberdrola, the transaction with Premier Energy marks the exit of the Spanish company from the Romanian market.

Iberdrola revealed in March its plan to divest some assets from the group.
