An Italian woman with no direct descendants left her entire fortune of 5 million euros to her Albanian nanny, her gesture infuriating beyond measure the 10 grandchildren who were eagerly waiting for her to inherit.

Maria Malfatti, descendant of one of the most famous families in Rovereto, a city in the province of Trento, died last year, in November, at the age of 80. The descendant of Valeriano Malfatti, former mayor of Rovereto and vice president of the Vienna Parliament, the woman owned many valuable assets, including several apartments, a historic building in the city center, but also significant sums of money in bank accounts.

Maria Malfatti was never married and had no children to pass on the family fortune to, so the grandchildren expected to inherit everything. But the woman made other plans, deciding to leave all her fortune, down to the last cent, to the woman who took care of her in the last years of her life, reports La Repubblica.

It is not known what the relationship was between Maria Malfatti and her grandchildren, but they were shocked by their relative’s decision, claiming that it was a scam and the caretaker took advantage of her vulnerable state.

Thus, after the will was read, the grandchildren contacted the lawyer Luca Fedrizzi and filed a lawsuit to freeze Malfatti’s assets, claiming that she was no longer of full mental capacity.

The grandchildren are convinced that the nanny pressured her to become the sole heir to the Malfatti fortune. Last month, they won their first legal victory, with a judge agreeing to freeze all assets until the case is resolved, deeming the risk of them being sold too great.

In the meantime, an investigation is to determine whether the aspects complained by the family are confirmed.

It is not the first time that a person has disinherited his family who he believes do not deserve to benefit from everything he has accumulated during his life. Earlier this year, a woman in China left her $2.8 million fortune to her pets, disinheriting her three children who neglected her.
