NATO is considering shooting down Russian missiles approaching its borders, according to a report by Polish publication RMF24, Sky News reports.

During Russia’s drone and missile attack on Ukraine on Sunday, one missile entered Poland’s airspace for 39 seconds.

“Following this incident, “all necessary procedures were activated to ensure the security of Polish airspace. Polish and allied aviation, among others, was activated,” the operational command of the Polish armed forces said at the time.

Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna told RMF24: “Russia knew that if the missile moved further into Poland, it would be shot down. It would be a counterattack”.

The official also explained that “various concepts are being analyzed within NATO, including shooting down such missiles when they are very close to NATO’s border”, but that this would require “Ukraine’s approval”.

This is not the first time a missile has entered Poland’s airspace.

On December 29 last year, a Russian missile entered Polish airspace, and on November 15, 2022, a missile landed in Poland, killing two civilians. It later turned out to be a stray Ukrainian projectile launched to intercept a Russian missile.
