Spoofing – the scam that uses artificial intelligence

Technology and especially artificial intelligence have reached a level that generates problems that are almost impossible to combat. Fraudsters use them very effectively, thus managing to quickly leave their victims without money in their accounts.

The National Directorate of Cyber Security issued an alert after hundreds of people, victims of cyber crimes, were apparently called by this authority.

Cristian Iosub, cyber security specialist, declared for ProTv: ”If the phone number is saved in the victim’s address book with a name, that name will be displayed. It doesn’t just show my phone number, the mobile further interprets the information showing what it should show based on the phone number“.

This way of masking identity is called spoofing and cannot be combated in any way at this time.

It is an attack that uses one hundred percent what we call “social engineering”. Someone calls you and convinces you by giving you a scenario over the phone to give certain data.

Mihai Rotariu, DNSC representative: ”Once you’ve been scammed, you’re basically put on a payer’s list, and the attackers know you’re likely to either fall for the trap or pay a certain amount of money“.

Along with spoofing, criminals can also use artificial intelligence, which can alter the caller’s voice.

Cristian Iosub: ”Human voice can also be cloned now, you can call as the attacker, you can call a victim pretending to be her mother, for example, with her mother’s voice and a man on the other end“.

Cybercriminals want to know your full name, IBAN and the last 6 digits of your PIN. With this data they then manage to get into your account and leave you without money. So don’t give out any data during a suspicious call.
