Few people know that in Romania there is a settlement where women without a home or family can find a refuge. The Babicilor hermitage became the home of women who have gone through trauma or violence in the family. Moreover, some of those who chose to live in this corner of the country want to dedicate their lives to faith.
Babicilor hermitage is a settlement of the old rite church in Jurilovca. The women who live in communion in this unique place have a life similar to that of nuns.
Under what conditions men are received
Those who have chosen to live in this special environment pray for those who help them, but also for peace in the world. The women of Babicilor Hermitage receive food and all the necessities of life from the people of the neighboring village.
In the center of the settlement in Tulcea county is a church dedicated to the Covering of the Mother of God. The place of worship was built in 1838 and is where the women of the community pray daily.
“Here, inside the church, there are some small buildings where old women take shelter. It is a place without the presence of men. Here come women who do not have sufficient material means of subsistence, some even have, but choose to retire here to be able to participate more easily in all church services. The place is known as a hermitage, as it is called in our community,” said Maxim Busla, a local from Jurilovca, a former fishery engineer, according to Libertatea.

The name of this settlement comes from the word of Russian origin “Babusca”, which means grandmother. Women who live in this place until they pass to the eternal ones are buried in the cemetery of the hermitage. Until the moment of their departure from this life, they take part in all the daily services.
