A United Airlines plane made an emergency return after a faulty toilet spilled into the passenger cabin.
The plane had taken off from Frankfurt airport (Germany) on Friday and was going to land in San Francisco (USA). A toilet broke and its contents leaked into the passenger cabin, generating an unbearable smell.
After only an hour of flight, passengers on board the aircraft complained of a foul smell. The flight attendants found that a toilet on the plane was faulty. Subsequently, the contents of the tank with feces and urine overflowed and reached the cabin.
The plane turned out of the way
The pilots contacted engineers on the ground, hoping they could help fix the problem, as the aircraft circled over the North Sea.
But the technicians could not find a solution, and the pilots decided to return to Frankfurt airport. The stench from the leaking faeces had become overpowering, affecting the entire aircraft. The flight, which would have lasted 11 hours and 30 minutes, was impossible in these conditions.
Even technicians called to investigate the problem after the emergency landing were unable to find an immediate solution, forcing the plane to remain on the ground.
The passengers were put up in a hotel overnight and took another flight to San Francisco the next day.
