At least four people have died and a dozen others injured after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan Wednesday bringing damage and destruction to the island nation. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years.
In addition to any damage in Taiwan, the earthquake also prompted evacuations for tsunami warnings in nearby Japan and the Philippines.
The earthquake hit shortly before 8 am local time, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 11 miles south of the coastal city of Hualien, about 96 miles southeast of Taipei.
More than 87,000 homes in Taiwan remained without power, and Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said the military will be deployed to help with rescue and recovery operations, which remain ongoing.
