FCSB is champion after 9 years

FCSB won the title of Romanian football champion, on Saturday evening, after defeating Farul Constanța with a score of 2-1 (1-0), at the National Arena in the capital, in the seventh stage of the play-off phase of the Superliga.

FCSB had not won the title since 2015, since then having seven second place finishes and one fifth place finish.

The “Red-Blues” needed only one more point to secure the title, with three stages before the end of the season, but they obtained the victory.

FCSB are now preparing for the next European season, with Gigi Becali’s side set to line up at the start of the Champions League qualifiers with four qualifying rounds, just like in years past.

The key change for the 2024–25 season, however, is the demise of the current group stage system, which featured 32 teams divided into eight groups of four.

From next season, 36 clubs will participate in the “league phase” of the Champions League (former group stage), which will compete in a joint competition, and a joint ranking will be drawn up at the end.

Under the new format, teams will play eight matches, but will no longer meet three opponents twice (home and away) but instead face eight different teams, playing half of those matches at home and half away.

To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be arranged in four value urns, based on the UEFA rankings.

Each team will then receive two opponents from each of these value urns, playing one at home and one away.

After the eight stages of the “league phase”, the joint ranking is made, in which the first eight ranked go directly to the eighth, places 9-24 will enter a play-off for the eighth, and positions 25-36 will be eliminated.
