“I never imagined, after years spent in the gym, as a medalist athlete for Romania and as a club and national team coach, that I, Gina Gogean, would end up living the humiliation that I have endured for a few months.
I never imagined that Romanian gymnastics would be shaken from the inside by so much hatred and divided by people who showed disrespect towards our sport and towards those who contributed to the selection and improvement of the current gymnasts in the team.
I want you to read these lines and understand that I am not and will not be a victim, I can walk with my head held high. Romanian gymnastics, however, is already suffering”said Gina Gogean.
“What is happening now at the lot goes against some principles that I consider defining for success in sports, in gymnastics.
People from the management structure of Romanian gymnastics tried by incorrect means to denigrate everything related to those who worked in this batch until December 2022, manipulating parents with the aim of denigrating and eliminating people who are not servile in the training process .
With these gymnasts from the team, together with all colleagues from the technical team, we won 16 medals at the European Championships in Mersin 2020, Munich 2022 and at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2022, as well as 10 medals at the World Cups in the last two years’ ‘emphasized Gogean, who accused that since the beginning of this year the situation at the lot has changed radically.
Gina Gogean: “I was isolated and I was stopped from any form of involvement in training“
“From January 2023, another training program was established in the batch. Without consulting or at least discussing this program with those whom the Federation considers its coordinators, even more so, without taking into account everything that we, the technical team, have built until December 2022.
I was isolated and I was stopped from any form of involvement in training. This led to the disorientation of the children and, more seriously, to the manipulation of the parents. I was assigned to take care of the training of the athletes on the beam only (and only on the beam) without having the right to get involved in the other apparatuses.
I didn’t have the opportunity to express my point of view regarding the technical training, knowing these athletes very well. Lately, I have been permanently insulted professionally by many people in gymnastics.
I was told that my methodical or physical training exercises are not effective, although all these exercises have been done by other generations of champions and are also done by other athletes from countries with current results in gymnastics (United States, Japan, China, UK, etc.)
“I was constantly accused of sabotaging the activity from the inside because I consult with the two coordinators who initiated and financed this project ‘Country, country, we want champions!’, people who have supported us since the beginning of the project.
We believe that the relationship with the two great coaches, Ms. Bitang and Mr. Bellu, can only be beneficial to Romanian gymnastics. I have been involved in this project for 8 years, for 5-6 years I have been working with these children and I have contributed to their training and to the results obtained. (…)
Although I drew attention and spoke respectfully, in the last months I was subjected to an indefinable shot of denigration. We kept quiet and did not amplify this state, wanting to surpass the European Championships in Antalya.
Coach/Professor Gina Gogean did not believe that at an international competition of scope and objective, namely the Antalya European Championships 2023, she could experience such humility and accept such an atmosphere. Everything that happened there does nothing but show that all those who do not fit into the new vision of those leading the training are executed and eliminated.Gina Gogean also said.

The former great gymnast emphasized that “high performance gymnastics cannot be done without teamwork, without work, without discipline and total involvement”.
“I, Gina Gogean, always respected my colleagues with whom I won Olympic, world and European medals, and that’s how I acted as a coach. I repeat, it is not only about me in everything I tell you, I bring these things to your attention in writing, because verbally I told the FRG president many times about the situation at the lot, this atmosphere does not generate the framework of the great performances.
In the hope that there is still a trace of respect for Romanian gymnastics, for the people who wrote history and who know that today it is not enough for ‘someone to see you well’ in the competition, but the objective is to see you on the podium, I conclude with the desire to to inform public opinion about the current situation and my position regarding what happened.
There is much more to say but for now I will stop here. I hope that the Federation, the people who lead it and make decisions, which must be neutral and impartial, be on the side of truth and not of interests, have the courage to take a correct decision and not use parents and children in this directed masquerade on me.
I reserve the right to inform the public about all these aspects that I consider defamatory of me and to take legal action against the people who defamed me and who contributed to my removal from the team for reasons other than professional ones.
I am not taking these steps to be reinstated, but to defend my honor and the career I have built in Romanian gymnastics. I thank those who during this period supported me through messages, people from within gymnastics and many fans from the country and abroad.
Be convinced that I will not allow myself to be humiliated nor will I accept to be the victim of the envy, frustrations and fantasies of people who have nothing to do with Romanian gymnastics. We had “a handful of coaches left in the country” and we were sold at the request of some who had come for four months.

The reaction of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation after the resignation of Gina Gogean
The leadership of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation submitted its honorable resignation during a meeting of its Executive Committee, gathered on April 24 and 25, but returned to the decision after discussions with the Minister of Sports, Eduard Novak, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.
“The Romanian school of gymnastics must modernize, adapt and evolve according to the model of the world’s elite countries. We have a talented generation of athletes, girls and boys, who do gymnastics with great efforts, a generation that we support and to which we provide the necessary conditions to achieve the desired results.
In gymnastics Romanian language requires silence. The problems of adults should remain at the level of adults, without having consequences on the athletes and their training. Resistance to these desired goals, at the level of 2023, is not a positive sign and does not correspond to the intentions of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, which, together with the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee and the Ministry of Sports, is making efforts to implement a real sports culture adapted to the requirements of the current generation.
