Every year, the first day of April is dedicated to pranks and collective humor, being a day full of surprises. On this day, laughter becomes law and pranks are the currency. People all over the world enter into a kind of alchemy of humor, turning simple jokes into true comedic masterpieces.

Origin of April Fool’s Day

The history of this tradition is as tangled and full of surprises as the jokes we see today. Some historians say that the custom of April Fools’ Day pranks dates back to ancient times, linked to seasonal changes and astrological influences. Others claim that it is related to the Julian calendar and its changes to the Gregorian calendar, when King Charles IX of France decided to change the date of the New Year’s celebration from April 1 to January 1. Before this change, April 1 was considered the date of the New Year, and on this day it was customary to give gifts and rejoice at a new beginning. With the change of the calendar, the tradition of giving gifts was preserved, but it evolved into a funnier and more unexpected form – innocent pranks and jokes that became characteristic of April 1.

Fool’s day in Romania

In Romania, the day of pranks, organized on the first day of April, dates back to the 19th century. Basically, this day is intended for harmless jokes between friends and acquaintances. Hoaxes are exposed by the well-known phrase – “April 1st Hoax”, when people are made aware that they have been tricked. According to some old Romanian superstitions, if a girl manages to trick a man on April 1, he must propose to her, because they will have an enriched life. However, another superstition says that young people who join their destinies on this day will not have a happy married life.
