The European minimum wage, introduced this year in Romania. How much will the Romanian employees earn in addition?

The European minimum wage becomes mandatory from this year for all EU member states, so following the application of this measure in Romania, the incomes of employees working on the minimum wage will increase.

In Romania, there are approximately 1.6 million employees with the minimum wage in the economy, which is currently 3,300 lei gross, i.e. just over 2,000 lei net.

Moreover, according to the European Statistical Office, Romania is among the European states with the lowest minimum wage.

The Ministry of Labor is already working on the development of a regulatory proposal for the transposition into national legislation of the European Directive on adequate minimum wages in the European Union.

The new European minimum wage could be introduced from the middle of this year, more precisely from July 1, 2024, and following the transposition of the European Directive, the minimum wage income could increase from 3,300 lei gross to 3,700 lei gross.

The highest and lowest minimum wage in the EU

Currently, the value of the minimum wage per economy in the European Union differs substantially: the highest minimum wage is registered in Luxembourg, and the lowest in Bulgaria, followed by Romania.

Thus, Romania is in the penultimate place in the EU in terms of the value of the minimum wage, being outranked by Hungary.

On January 1, 2024, 22 of the 27 EU member states had a national minimum wage.

The highest national minimum wage in: Luxembourg – €2,571 per month, Ireland – €2,146, Netherlands – €2,070.

The lowest value of the national minimum wage: Bulgaria – €477 per month, Romania – €663, Hungary – €697 per month.

Five of the 27 EU member states do not have a minimum wage per economy – Denmark, Italy, Austria, Finland and Sweden.
