CONSTANTA: Elderly people kept in improper conditions. Serious irregularities at a nursing home

After the “homes of horror” episode, the authorities continue to discover serious irregularities in nursing homes for the elderly.

Such violations were identified at the Cuviosul Ioan home in the municipality of Constanța, where representatives of ISU Dobrogea and AJPIS inspectors found that the elderly are kept in improper conditions.

The first alarm signal was raised last fall, when AJPIS discovered that an old man was being housed in the basement, in an unsafe space in case of fire. The representatives of the hostel not only did not solve the problem, but sent several beneficiaries to the same space.

Director of AJPIS Constanța, Laura Constandin:

The center told us that it had fulfilled all the measures, but the surprise was now, on March 16, when the inspectors not only discovered that the measure had not been fulfilled, as those from the center claimed, and, in addition , they found three more in the same room, located in the basement, it is not a proper space for the accommodation of elderly people and, in addition, the inspectors from ISU Dobrogea were there in control and mentioned the same thing in the minutes on who drew it up. It is absolutely forbidden to accommodate elderly or non-elderly persons in the basement or basement of a building.

At the same time, it was found that the unit was overcrowded, and the elderly were not properly cared for and fed:

The capacity of the center there, as authorized by the Directorate of Public Health, is 13 people. The inspectors found 17 people there and actually registered as beneficiaries of the cent, 20. Irregularities were found regarding the feeding of the elderly, the provision of personnel at the level of the applicable standard depending on the degree of dependence and co-dependence of the beneficiaries, problems in terms of providing cooked food, i.e. insufficient staff in the kitchen. From the point of view of hygiene, the problem was not really raised there, but the irregularities found led to the conclusion that the life of the beneficiaries is not safe and in a center that operates legally there.

Under these conditions, AJPIS Constanța ordered the suspension of the activity and proposed the withdrawal of the license, but the measure was contested, so the center continues to operate.

The representatives of the hostel rejected the accusations and declared that they are willing to be fully transparent with the press and public opinion.
