At the beginning of March 2024, the news that Pro Romania was negotiating an alliance with AUR caused vehement reactions from the members and supporters of the political formation led by Victor Ponta. MEP Corina Crețu resigned on this occasion from Pro Romania and Ponta said that he would not run for any position after these negotiations.

Invited to the column “Face the voter”, Victor Ponta stated that the negotiations failed and Pro Romania members turned to other parties.

“No Alliance has been made and is not being made. The problem was that Pro Romania, like many other small parties, was crushed by this mammoth PNL-PSD. Me and Corina Crețu, and other colleagues, were convinced that, having been expelled from the PSD, during Liviu Dragnea’s time, that our natural place was still there.

PSD did not want a comeback. Some colleagues went to PSD, some to PNL, very few from Pro Romania went to AUR.

It’s a kind of political cannibalism that leads us to four forces, three that PNL-PSD are together. It depends on how you think,” the president of Pro Romania told Ziare.com.

He also stated that from the beginning of the negotiations some of the members refused the idea of an alliance.

“And I and Corina Crețu and other colleagues said, very elegantly, that we are not compatible with George Simion. Of course, he is a politician who will have an anti-system vote with an important score, but I am rather the one who believes that the system must be reformed, not blown up.

Those who blew up systems don’t know how well they succeeded,” says Victor Ponta.

He also stated that for the time being he is not even thinking about a return to politics, and is only an honorary economic adviser to Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and does not get involved in political decisions.

“I still hold on to the freedom to express my opinions without you telling me, ah is X or Y’s consultant and that’s why he says what he says. I have found that I am much more credible now than when I was prime minister, or party president, because people feel:

“This man tells us something because he has an interest or because he thinks that way”, concluded Victor Ponta.
