Well, these days Apple is going through its most serious anti-trust lawsuit yet, with the company being accused by the US Department of Justice of monopolizing the smartphone market by using anti-competitive tactics. Thus, we find out why the company chose that the Apple Watch can only be used by users of an iPhone.
The company says that when developing the Apple Watch, it thought about making the accessory easy to connect to both iPhones and Android smartphones. However, this important feature was dropped before launch. In response to the US Department of Justice, the company also provided arguments.
The answer would be related to Apple’s concerns about technological limitations and even security risks which the Apple Watch could have acquired if the system had been open to connect to Android devices. Apple feared that it would not have as much control as it has for iOS.
Basically, the Cupertino company is accused of making it impossible to connect its smartwatches to terminals other than iOS. As it has stated since the filing of the lawsuit, Apple is trying to defend itself by any means because it does not want to change its operating principles.
The company also said that this process “it hinders the ability to create the kind of technology that people appreciate from Apple“. Now, it remains to be seen how the process evolves. It is possible that the US Department of Justice will force the company in the coming years to make it possible to connect the Apple Watch and other accessories in the portfolio with Android phones.
