We all know the story of Atlantis, the sunken city mentioned by the philosopher Plato in his writings. Well, it seems Atlantis wasn’t the only one to have such an interesting history. On the territory of Romania, there is a sunken city that not many people know about.

The city in Romania that Nicolae Ceaușescu decided to sink

Romania is one of the countries that can boast of the most beautiful and interesting stories. At every step, in our country, there are places with an impressive history. This is also the case of the sunken city in Romania.

Not many people know, but more than 50 years ago, Nicolae Ceaușescu literally sank an important city. Currently, this city has become a tourist spot on the Romanian map.

Orșova, because it is about this city, has a history that not many people know. More than 50 years ago, Orșova was the “victim” of a grand plan set up by Nicolae Ceaușescu.

The former communist dictator wanted to build the Iron Gates I hydroelectric plant. Because it was going to be one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Europe, Ceaușescu did everything possible for his plan to take shape.

The hydroelectric plant at Portile de Fier I could not be erected until Orșova was submerged, literally. This also happened, by the way, during the period in which Nicolae Ceaușescu was in charge of Romania.

Unfortunately, out of the desire to fulfill his plan, Nicolae Ceaușescu “sacrificed” several cities. Not only Orșova went under the water, but also the old commune of Dubova and the island of Ada Kaleh.

Whoever wants to see the city of Orșova, has to wait for a certain moment. This settlement becomes visible only when the reservoir at Iron Gates I is completely drained. This last happened almost 10 years ago.

From the great city of Orsova, at present, the ruins remain. In the past, Orșova was known as a prosperous, populated city, where people lived peacefully. In Old Orșova there were many inns and shops, and the community was united.

When Nicolae Ceaușescu made the decision to sink Orșova, the life of the people here changed radically. They were all forced to move elsewhere and start a new chapter from scratch.
