Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu discussed on Wednesday, at the Victoria Palace, with the US Special Representative for the economic recovery of Ukraine, Penny Pritzker, about the role that Romania can play in the country’s reconstruction process.

“We are at a stage of identifying the most effective methods of support and transposing them into an integrated strategy for the reconstruction of Ukraine, in which Romania wants to play an important role”, stated Marcel Ciolacu, quoted in a press release sent by the Government.

In the perspective of preparing and starting this process of reconstruction of Ukraine, Ciolacu also said, Romania takes as its main benchmark the EU mechanism for Ukraine, worth 50 billion euros, and proposes to carry out bilateral actions, through collaboration directly with Ukraine, but also within extended formats, at regional level or together with strategic partners.

The Head of the Romanian Executive added that Romania’s approach is centered on the idea that the actions of the states that will be involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine must be complementary, not competitive, and that this process involves a long-term effort and the coordination of the entire international community, in which the role and the involvement of the United States remains essential.

The prospect of European integration of Ukraine should guide the whole process of reconstruction of this country. In this context, Marcel Ciolacu emphasized that a strategic objective of Romania is also the connection of the Republic of Moldova to this reconstruction effort aimed primarily at Ukraine, considering that the Republic of Moldova was affected by the conflict and both states need support for the European path they have taken.

The meeting was also attended by the US ambassador to Bucharest, Kathleen Kavalec, and the Romanian government delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacșu, the head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, Alexandru Ghigiu, and State Councilor Nicolae Comănescu.
