In a message for the “Bucharest Leaders’ Summit” event, the president of the Defense, Public Order and National Security Committee in the Senate, Nicoleta Pauliuc, says that, 20 years ago, when Romania joined NATO, it was undoubtedly the moment of inflection, after which the direction followed by society, the economy, and state institutions was the right one.

“I am no longer talking about the essential element of national security, without which neither democracy nor economic prosperity can be quantified. This is relevant to remember especially in the context where we all see that there is a tendency to change the perception of the finality of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Let us be happy with the idea that, here in Romania, at Kogălniceanu, the largest NATO base in the Eastern Flank of the Alliance is being built. I say this because I saw that there is the temptation of some to ask us to prepare for a possible military conflict by holding pansies, making wreaths and saying “aloha” to the Russians”, declared Nicoleta Pauliuc.

The president of the Senate Defense Committee also says that joining NATO paved Romania’s path to the European Union, given that the North Atlantic Alliance is not only a military, but also a political construction.
