Two people were detained after using counterfeit banknotes

The police in Iaşi detained a man and a woman for distributing fake 100 lei banknotes. They used them to purchase low-value products from various companies.

During the investigation of this case, 61 counterfeit banknotes were discovered. There are suspicions that counterfeit money has been introduced into circulation in several regions.

According to the information provided by the Romanian Police, the police teams from the Iasi Organized Crime Brigade, the National Central Office for Combating Counterfeit Currency and the Cluj-Napoca Organized Crime Brigade, under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iasi District Court, – assigned five warrants for conducting searches at the homes of the suspects, in Maramureş county, in connection with a criminal case regarding the distribution of false values ​​and fraud.

The investigation is ongoing to fully clarify the situation

Following the investigations carried out between August 18, 2023 – August 20, 2023, it was found that a man and a woman appeared, one by one, at various companies in Iaşi county, who distributed fake 100 lei banknotes, printed on plastic support.

They aimed to maximize profit by using these fake banknotes to purchase goods of relatively low value.

During the searches, 61 counterfeit banknotes were found, which were confiscated for further investigation. There are suspicions that those involved would have introduced fake banknotes into circulation in and in other regions. The investigation is ongoing to fully clarify the situation.

On Tuesday, the two suspects were detained for a period of 24 hours. They will be presented to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iasi Court to decide on the legal measures. The specialized expertise was provided by the Special Operations Directorate of the Romanian Police.

During the action, the policemen from the Maramureş County Police Inspectorate and the gendarmes from the Maramureş County Gendarmerie Inspectorate provided the necessary support.

Imprisonment for counterfeiters

Forgery of legal tender currency attracts a penalty of between 3 and 10 years in prison, accompanied by the prohibition to exercise certain rights.

The same sanction is applied in case of falsification of a coin issued by the competent authorities, before it is officially put into circulation, according to the Criminal Code.
