Scenes like in movies took place after dark, in an intensely trafficked area of Tulcea. In a moment of terror, the young man targets pedestrians. The 15-year-old teenager was driving with a friend on a street in Tulcea. He took the airsoft gun out the window and fired. He found a 40-year-old man. Fortunately, the wound was superficial and he is out of danger. Scared, the injured man called the police, who started looking for the aggressor.

Airsoft guns are considered non-lethal

“The police quickly identified the person in question, and following the searches carried out at his home, two air-soft weapons were identified”stated Ionela Herda, spokesperson of the Tulcea County Police Inspectorate. According to Observator sources, the weapons were bought by the teenager himself. And this although the law says that such weapons are sold to those who are over 18 years old. In reality, however, no one checks the age of customers on the Internet. The teenager was taken to the station and questioned. A criminal case was opened in his name for beatings and other violence. The investigators also called the parents to give explanations.

Airsoft guns are considered non-lethal. They can only be used in specially arranged spaces or in polygons. Those who violate the law risk fines between 2,000 and 5,000 lei. Even more dangerous are modified airsoft guns. Their power increases and they can cause serious injuries. “They copy, aesthetically, the part of a firearm, but they are used for leisure and are marketed strictly to adults. Under no circumstances can they be used in public, or in crowded places, institutions, schools and so on”stated Răzvan Ciopragaseller of airsoft guns.

Airsoft guns can cause serious injuries if used at close range. Such cases are increasingly common in Romania. In 2021, in Popeşti leordeni, a 31-year-old man was shot with an airsoft gun, out of nowhere, on the street. The aggressor was in a car and did not know the man. And in Baia Mare, a sniper shot an airsoft gun at a car at a traffic light. The window of the right door was shattered, but the young people in the car escaped only with fright.

And last year, in Constanta, a seven-year-old student entered the school with an airsoft gun. The sports teacher found the rifle in a closet and initially did not even notify the police. In the end, the boy’s father was fined for not locking the gun in a safe place.
