Brian Cox, the actor best known for his role in ‘Succession’, has expressed his skepticism towards religion in a new interview, saying it prevents humanity from evolving. The actor did not stop there with the unexpected statements, he stated that “the Bible is one of the worst books”.
In an appearance on “The Starting Line Podcast,” the “Succession” actor chatted with host Rich Leigh about a variety of topics, including religion and politics.

Asked by Leigh whether religion is holding humanity back, Cox stated: “Oh, considerably, yes. I think religion holds us back because there are belief systems that are outside of us. They don’t have to do with who we are, we have to do with, “Oh, if God said it and God does it, then you come and ask, But who is God?” We created the idea of God and we created it as a control issue, which is also an essentially patriarchal issue, not enough space was given to the matriarchy.”
The actor also talked about the differences between mothers and fathers.
“Being a mother is what really influences our lives, fathers don’t influence us because they are too selfish. Mothers must do it, because they have an umbilical cord. That’s what it’s all about, that umbilical cord connection. Even if it is cut at birth, it exists between babies and mothers, and men don’t have that, they are just sperm donors.” the actor also stated, according to the Daily Mail.

Cox said that undermining a patriarchal approach to society would be difficult, adding that the stories behind them even reach back to the Bible: “We do it because we have to honor them and we have to give them their place and we’re resistant to that… We’re talking about Adam and Eve, I mean the propaganda goes back to the beginning of time – the Bible is one of the worst books in my opinion of sight. Because it begins with the idea that woman was created from Adam’s rib. They believed it because they were innocent enough.”
He also stated that people who are passionate about spirituality need to be guided, but he believes that the Bible is not the answer.
“They need it, but they don’t need to be lied to. They need some kind of truth, but that is not the truth. It’s kind of a mythology, you know? It has nothing to do with what women understand better than anyone.” the actor also said.
Brian Cox criticized Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in ‘Napoleon’
A few weeks ago, in a talk at the British Library in London last Sunday as part of HistFest 2024, the “Succession” actor called Joaquin Phoenix’s work in Ridley Scott’s biopic – “Napoleon” – right “terrible”.
“It’s really awful,” the actor said of Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, according to The Standard.

“I don’t know what he was thinking”he added, according to People.
Phoenix, 49, played Napoleon Bonaparte in the Oscar-nominated historical drama, directed by Scott and written by David Scarpa, which was released last November.
The winner of the Oscar for his role in “Joker” starred alongside Vanessa Kirby, who gave life to Josephine de Beauharnais, Tahar Rahim was Paul Barras, Rupert Everett was Arthur Wellesley and Ben Miles played the role of Armand de Caulaincourt.
In the discussion with moderator Clive Myrie, entitled “History on Stage and Screen”, Cox said of the lead role of Napoleon: “I would have played much better than Joaquin Phoenix, I assure you”.
He continued the string of controversial statements, saying that it was Phoenix’s fault: “I don’t think Ridley Scott is helping him!”.

Regarding the historical accuracy of the film and other such productions, Cox stated: “You can say it’s a good drama. No, that’s a lie,” he said, also calling the 1995 Oscar-winning movie “Braveheart” “bullshit.” Additionally, he added that director and star Mel Gibson “it was wonderful, but it presented a series of lies“.
