In our country, the summer time system is applied, which aims to increase the number of hours in which people benefit from the natural light of the Sun. In other words, the clocks are set one hour ahead. The time change is made once in spring and once in autumn, when it returns to winter time, considered the standard time.

During summer time, the difference between Romania’s official time and Universal Time is three hours, compared to two hours when it is winter time.

The switch to summer time in 2024

According to the current European Union legislation, it switches to summer time on the last Sunday of March and returns to the initial time on the last Sunday of October. Through the time change system, the clocks are adjusted by one hour every spring and autumn.

During daylight saving time, the clock goes forward one hour (3:00 a.m. becomes 4:00 a.m.). In winter time, the clocks go back one hour and 4:00 becomes 3:00. Daylight saving time applies until the last Sunday in October (October 27, 2024).

When the time changes

In 2024, the switch to summer time takes place on the night of March 30/31. Sunday, March 31, becomes the shortest day of the year, after 3:00 a.m. becomes 4:00 a.m. and will have just 23 hours. Daylight saving time will be in effect until October 27 this year.

Summer time in Romania

In Romania, summer time is correlated with the summer time practiced in the states of the European Union (EU). Official summer time, Eastern European Time, was introduced in Romania for the first time in 1932.

Until 1939, it operated every year, between the first Sunday of April, 00:00, and the first Sunday of October, 01:00 (local time). Between 1941 and 1979, summer time was no longer used, according to www.astro-urseanu.ro.

In 1979, Romania signed the Time Zone Convention, and in 1997, by Ordinance no. 20 regarding the establishment of summer time and official summer time on the territory of Romania, in art. 1 states that: “Within the summer timetable, the official summer time is established, shifted one hour ahead of Eastern European time, applicable from the last Sunday of March, 3:00 a.m., which becomes 4:00 a.m., until the last Sunday of October, 4:00 a.m., which becomes 3:00 a.m.”

Possible effects on the body

With the transition to summer time, we sleep less. Experts say that it takes about a week to adjust to the new time system.

The time change can disrupt the biological clock and with it hormonal disturbances can occur. Especially with regard to melatonin, the hormone responsible precisely for regulating the body’s biological clock. The switch to daylight saving time can trigger decreased alertness and even increased fatigue. Recent studies have shown that changing the time can affect mental health in extreme cases.
