US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine is not as stark as he has made it seem by praising Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin as a “genius”.

“It’s not quite as black and white as some people think,” insisted Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

Sikorski argues that it’s all more nuanced as Poland mounts a larger diplomatic effort to try to win Trump over to its side against the dangers Putin posits to Poland.

“Donald Trump was right to urge all of us in Europe to spend more on defense,” he said in an interview with POLITICO’s parent company Axel Springer, adding that Trump had also sent anti-tank missiles to Ukraine “before the war, when others didn’t”.

For Poland, Russia’s advances in Ukraine mean any weakening of the US commitment to NATO is an existential threat, after Trump threatened not to defend European countries that do not spend enough on defense.

The Polish minister also pointed out that Trump remained silent when the US Congress approved the package of more than 60 billion dollars for Ukraine, and this would suggest, according to him, a change of attitude towards Ukraine.

“I haven’t heard any protests,” he said. “So I hope candidate Trump has seen that this opposition to helping Ukraine is actually not popular in the United States, that it’s hurting his chances” of being re-elected.

This, although the Financial Times points out that aside from his legal problems, one explanation for Trump’s relative silence while Congress approved the aid package is that he could no longer accuse Biden of wasting money on Ukraine, should Kiev not make progress by November, if aid had not been sent to be “wasted”.

A Politico analysis a few days ago showed that former and possibly future US President Donald Trump blames Ukraine for many of his political problems.

The publication first of all recalls that, after all, a telephone conversation with Zelensky led to the opening of the first impeachment trial of Trump as the US president in December 2019, after the then leader of the White House was accused of trying to influence the 2020 presidential election by relying on the support of the Ukrainian head of state to discredit Joe Biden by launching an investigation into the activities of his son Hunter in Ukraine.

That phone call played a central role in one of the most embarrassing episodes of Trump’s political career: his first impeachment.
