Apple is reaching a deal with OpenAI to use the startup’s technology on the iPhone as part of a broader effort to bring artificial intelligence features to its devices, according to people familiar with the matter, cited by The Business Times.

The two sides have finalized terms of a pact to use ChatGPT features in iOS 18, Apple’s next operating system for the iPhone, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the situation is private. Apple has also held talks with Alphabet’s Google about licensing the company’s Gemini chatbot. These discussions did not lead to an agreement, but are ongoing.

A deal with OpenAI would allow Apple to offer a popular chatbot as part of a flurry of new artificial intelligence features it plans to announce next month. Bloomberg reported in April that talks with OpenAI had intensified. However, there is no guarantee that an agreement will be announced imminently.

Apple, OpenAI and Google representatives declined to comment.

Apple plans to make a splash in the world of artificial intelligence in June when it holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. As part of that push, the company will run some of its future AI functions through data centers equipped with its own processors, Bloomberg reported.

Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he personally uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but added that there are “a number of issues that need to be worked out.” He promised that new AI features will come to Apple products on a “very thoughtful basis.”
