The vice-president of the National Sports Agency, Gabriel Toncean, states that he is working on a project regarding the introduction of nutritional education as a subject in schools. Children would learn about healthy food, interpret a label and distinguish between good and bad foods. Toncean states that he does not want to load the school curriculum, emphasizing that the decision-making factor in this regard is the Ministry of Education, reports News.ro
“I think our children deserve to have decision-making power over the food they eat. It would be much easier for us to reduce this scourge of childhood obesity with appropriate education. It is much easier for children to learn about nutrition education at school, than later.. (…) This achievement will only be possible with the help of the Ministry of Education is the deciding factor. What would be, I think, more easily perceptible for parents is that I don’t want to complicate or supplement the school subject, which is already crowded”, said Gabriel Toncean on Thursday evening, on Media TV.
The project, on which professionals from several fields worked, including athletes, teachers and nutritionists, aims to raise awareness about healthy food. During the nutritional education classes, the students would learn to read and interpret a label of a food product.
“The project must be completed because it is an added value for children in Romania. (..) I will not give up until this matter becomes a priority. (…) I think that a well-educated child will not allow himself, when he eats healthily, to consume alcohol. A child who does not consume alcohol does not have that bridge to drugs”, adds Gabriel Toncean.
He specifies that the Ministry of Education would be the factor that would find the way in which nutritional education would be introduced as a subject of study.
