A young man from Siberia was sentenced to 10 years in prison for wanting to join the Ukrainian army

A Russian military court sentenced a young man from Siberia to ten years in prison. He is accused of wanting to join the Ukrainian army to fight against Russia, according to the official Russian news agency Tass, AFP reports, News.ro transmits.

The 26-year-old man, who lives in Buretia, in Siberia, was preparing to join the Ukrainian forces because he “does not support the policy” of Moscow, the Russian Security Services (FSB) stated in a statement.

He was in contact, since the spring of 2023, with “a resident of Ukraine” and bought military equipment online: a helmet, a bulletproof vest and a military uniform, as well as a Ukrainian flag, according to the FSB.

The young man was arrested while on his way to Ukraine

The young man was arrested in the Siberian region of Kemerovo, while he was on his way to Ukraine, according to the same source.

He wanted to join the “Liberty Legion of Russia”, a self-proclaimed unit of Russian anti-Kremlin fighters classified as a “terrorist” organization in Russia.

This young man, whose name has not been revealed, is to serve the first three years of his sentence in a normal prison, and then be transferred to a penitentiary colony with a “severe regime”.

Also on Thursday, the FSB announced the sentencing to 11 years in prison for “espionage” of a Ukrainian citizen, accused of having transmitted to Ukraine information about the location of Russian troops and some infrastructure located in the occupied part of the Ukrainian region of Zaporozhye (south- east), in order to guide some attacks.
