The two leaders expressed this position in a joint statement given to the press in Paris, after a meeting in which they addressed international and commercial issues of bilateral interest.

“We believe that an Olympic truce in all theaters of war can be an opportunity to develop sustainable solutions in full compliance with international law,” Macron said.

Speaking about the war in Ukraine, the French president welcomed what he described as a commitment by China not to sell arms to Russia and generally not to provide it with any military aid.

“We respect the old ties that unite China and Russia”, said the French president. “Given this complex history, we welcome the commitment of the Chinese authorities to refrain from selling any weapons, any kind of aid to Moscow and to strictly control exports of dual-use goods”, that is, goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. and military, added Macron.

For his part, President Xi Jinping asked France not to “dirty” his country in the matter of the Russian-Ukrainian war, he appreciated that Beijing plays a “positive role” in finding a solution aimed at ending this conflict.

Also, the Chinese president called for peace negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, within an international conference “recognized by Russia and Ukraine”, thus suggesting that he disapproves of discussion formats that exclude Russia, such as the conference that will be hosted by Switzerland in June.

“We are opposed to using the Ukrainian crisis to shift the responsibility to others, to smear a third country and start a new Cold War,” President Xi Jinping stressed, referring to the recurring criticism of Western countries on the close relations between China and Russia. (Agerpress)
