Video footage and images from the deadly airstrike in Gaza that killed seven aid workers for the nonprofit World Central Kitchen appear to indicate the attack was carried out by precision-guided missiles launched by drones, a explosive weapons expert.
Chris Cobb-Smith, a former British Army artillery officer and munitions expert, said extensive damage to three vehicles seen in video footage and images from the scene was consistent with the use of “sea rockets precision drone shots,” adding that it was “hard to believe” that the tragic incident was accidental.
The drone that launched the missiles would have had to be operated in conjunction with a surveillance drone, Cobb-Smith said, meaning the Israeli military would have had full visibility of the machines. At least two of the vehicles had WCK logos on their roofs, the group said.
The “limited explosion” and “considerable localized destruction” seen in photos and videos after the incident are also consistent with an Israeli strike with an unmanned aerial vehicle, he added.
Cobb-Smith told CNN that rocket fragments will be needed to definitively identify the exact ammunition used in the attack.
Patrick Senft, a research coordinator at Armament Research Services (ARES), agrees with Cobb-Smith, saying the strike traces “appear to be consistent with UAV-deployed munitions.”
“Without munition fragments, I can’t say anything for sure, but the damage to the vehicles appears to be consistent with precision-guided munitions with a small explosive charge,” Senft said.
