On April 17, 2024, the Spanish Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign policy and security, i.e. the EU’s foreign minister, signed a list of 44 appointments of heads of EU diplomatic representations abroad. They have the ranks of head of the EU Delegation (EU ambassador), head of the Office and ad interim affairs officer.

No Romanian diplomat is on the list! The Romanian Elena-Denisa Ionete was appointed EU ambassador to Djibouti, but she does not count, because she is not a Romanian diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but worked at the EEAS, where she held the position of advisor and senior inspector. The Romanian diplomats from the MFA in Bucharest who participated were not selected.

Among the lucky nominees are Borrell’s Spaniards, but also Germans, but no Romanians, because Brussels is led by a coterie of several countries from Western Europe. Berlin even managed to replace the German who held the position of EU ambassador in Ankara with a German!

In exchange for favoring Germany in areas of interest to it by the EEAS led by the Spanish Josep Borrell, Berlin closes its eyes to the fact that in Latin America where Spain has interests, the diplomatic representatives of the EU make policy for the socialist government in Madrid, according to the instructions of the same Josep Borrell .

Equality between member states is just a myth. In reality, the EU represents the geopolitical interests of several states, as the Ankara appointment proves.

Romanians represent 4.5% of the EU population, so relative to the number of the population, they should have received at least two positions among Borrell’s 44 appointments. But Romania has a much more developed diplomatic network than some states with a smaller population or those that appeared after 1990, so they should have received 3-4 posts, but they didn’t receive any!

This is where Romania’s diplomacy has reached, which once enjoyed international prestige and wrote history!

Romania has been a member of the EU for over 17 years and has sent Romanian representatives to the European Parliament in four legislatures, once appointed by the Romanian Parliament and three times voted by the voters. The result was the same every time and will be repeated ad infinitum, if the representatives of the same parties will reach the European Parliament.
