Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has announced that his country is preparing for war, while expressing a desire to avoid conflict.

The leader of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, emphasized his country’s peaceful intentions during a visit to Grodno, on the border with Poland and Lithuania. “We must not threaten anyone. We do not want any foreign territory,” Lukashenko declared.

“Don’t believe anyone who says we want to fight,” the Belarusian president also said, in the statements made on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of a hospital.

But he added: “We are preparing for war“, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

Lukashenko stated that Belarus is equipping its army for the possibility of an attack, accusing NATO member states Poland and Lithuania of preparing for war by building fortifications and purchasing offensive weapons.

The head of the Belarusian state assured the inhabitants of Grodno – which in the interwar period was Polish territory – that they “belong to Belarus”.

“We will not yield to anyone,” Lukashenko said.
