The message was sent on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the accession of the three countries to the North Atlantic Alliance, and the text of the ambassadors was published, exclusively, in The Sunday Telegraph. In it, they warned that Russia may change its direction of attack from Ukraine to the Baltic Sea, in a maneuver reminiscent of the occupation during Stalin’s time.
The ambassadors said joining the alliance meant their nations had never enjoyed “stronger collective security” than now, but “neither have we faced a more daunting threat”.
“We knew then (at the time of the Soviet occupation – no), just as we know today, that only a collective defense can guarantee security in Europe. We lacked this in the 1930s and paid a heavy price; a price that the Ukrainians are paying even now”, added the ambassadors.
They warned that Russia could again try to make a similar move as under Stalin, and this would be dangerous, especially since the natural borders are few and there is no room for a possible retreat. “We are very aware that Russia’s war economy and its military, which is very well prepared for combat, can quickly pivot from the south to the west. (…) We, those on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, have few natural borders and nowhere to retreat.”
At the same time, in the exclusive text for The Sunday Telegraph, the ambassadors also emphasized the “existential challenge” to their independence, which “may initially seem ambiguous, masked by a blizzard of misinformation and other distractions”.
In February, Foreign Intelligence Service of Estonia warned that Russia was preparing for a military conflict with the West in the next decade. Furthermore, the commander of the Estonian army asked the Government to double defense spending, as it is taking into account a possible Russian attack. Previously, and the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallaswarned that Europe has between 3 and 5 years to prepare for a possible military threat from Russia on NATO’s eastern flank.
