David Cameron says Hamas has received ‘very generous offer’ of 40-day Gaza ceasefire

The British Foreign Minister, David Cameron, said on Monday in Riyadh that the Hamas terrorists were sent a proposal for a 40-day truce in the Gaza Strip, during which the release of the hostages should be discussed and implemented in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

“A very generous offer of a 40-day ceasefire, to release thousands of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of these hostages” has been made to Hamas, Cameron told a meeting of the World Economic Forum.

A delegation of Hamas is expected, on Monday, in Egypt, where they must respond to the latest proposal of the mediators in favor of a truce in Gaza, associated with the release of hostages, after almost seven months of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

“I hope Hamas will accept this deal and frankly all the pressure of the world and all eyes should be on them today to tell them to accept this deal,” Cameron said. He added that the proposal would lead to “a stop to the fighting that we all so desperately want to see”.

Egypt, Qatar and the US have been trying for months to negotiate an agreement between Israel and Hamas, and a recent dynamic seems to suggest a new momentum in favor of stopping the fighting, AFP notes.

The British foreign minister also pleaded in favor of a “political horizon for the two-state solution”. “Those responsible for October 7, the leaders of Hamas, should leave the Gaza Strip and dismantle the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza,” he said.

“The Palestinian people must have a political future, but Israel’s security must also be ensured, and the two elements must go hand in hand,” he concluded.
