Orthodox Calendar April 27, 2024 – Saint Simeon the Apostle

Every year, Saint Simeon the Apostle is commemorated on April 27. We know about Saint Simeon that he was the son of Cleopas, the younger brother of Saint and Righteous Joseph. He was also one of the 70 Apostles of the Savior and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Judea.

St. Apostle Simeon was appointed the bishop of Jerusalem and remained in this position until a rather advanced age. According to the historian Eusebius, St. Simeon was the second bishop of Jerusalem and that when he received the crown of martyrdom, St. Apostle Simeon was over 100 years old.

Saint Simeon passed to the eternal after he was caught and subjected to torture, during the reign of Emperor Trajan (98-117), at the age of over one hundred years, for two reasons: first, because he was of royal descent, from the house to King David, and the second, because he was a Christian.

He died crucified, just like the Lord.

The powerful prayer that is good to say on April 27

Deserving yourself, most blessed, to be related by body to the One Who with His Body became impoverished out of mercy, you enriched yourself with the grace of healing. With the departure to God deifying you, Hierarch, you completely became in the form of God, shining with the lights of martyrdom, Holy Most Holy Martyrs and Hierarch Simeon.

With the garments of the hierarchy you adorned yourself and with the beauties of martyrdom you beautified yourself and with greatness before God sitting, you shine illuminating yourself with the Light of the Most Holy Trinity.
That is why we ask you, Holy Hierarch Simeon, as one who has courage in God, pray for those who faithfully honor you, that the Good Lord give us health and bring healing to our body and soul.

Amen!
