Present live in the studio The Power of NewsSebastian Burduja, the Minister of Energy, spoke about one of the most discussed issues of the moment, namely what will happen to energy bills when the price cap measure expires.
Before explaining this, however, the minister wanted to emphasize that, according to the latest Eurostat data, collected in the third quarter of 2023, Romanians have the fifth cheapest electricity in the European Union. Likewise, contrary to press reports, gas prices are the fourth lowest in the EU bloc.
Regarding the bills that people will pay in the next period, Sebastian Burduja says that the ministry is trying to optimize the capping scheme, without interfering with the price for the final customer.
In other words, the producer will be intervened, so that everything that exceeds 400 lei MW will be taxed. In other words, a supplier, in order to emit energy for us, buys from the producer at a lower price, which will be reflected in our bills, but not immediately. Since suppliers don’t buy for tomorrow, but for later, it’s a basket, they store it.
Therefore, the energy bills will decrease from June, after which, if the prices are at a reasonable level, we will let the market take its course and we will think of a solution for the truly vulnerable Romanians, added the minister. He gave the example of two houses, one in Primaveri and one in a village, both paying the same price for energy, which is not natural, because we are not talking about comparable incomes.
Anyway, he says, market prices have fallen compared to the peak of the crisis, now we are back to normal conditions, but the energy card measure was a good one to support vulnerable households. In addition, the pressure to reduce prices on producers will continue, assured Sebastian Burduja, the Minister of Energy.
