Data recently published by the Spanish Social Security reveals a significant increase in the number of foreigners employed in Spain, with an increase of 39,953 registered in February 2024 alone. It is worth noting that foreigners now represent 37% of the total new entrants, thus marking a historical record in this field. However, the detailed analysis of the data shows that, despite their dominant position among foreign employees in Spain, Romanians have not registered a significant increase recently. This situation is evident from the low number of Romanians registered with Social Security in Spain, with only 1,768 new ones registered in the last two years, a figure that represents a historical minimum since the early 2000s, the period of massive emigration.

Romanians and Moroccans, the pillars of the social security system in Spain

Morocco and Romania are considered important pillars in the Social Security system, especially regarding the contribution of foreign employees. The exponential increase in the number of foreign workers in Spain, together with a significant increase in the population coming from third countries, has become a crucial factor in both demographic changes in Spain and employment. These findings are supported by objective statistical data as well as developments in recent years. For example, in 2023, all of Spain’s population growth was generated by immigrants.

The upward trend of foreigners can be observed not only from a demographic perspective, but also from the perspective of the record number of members registered with the Social Security. Currently, a total of 2,762,085 foreigners are registered, and this figure has increased by 599,686 people since February 2020, before the impact of the pandemic. In the last 12 months, the number of foreigners affiliated with Social Security increased by 205,303. Most of them are originally from Romania.

In total, 334,395 Romanians contribute to the Spanish social security system, according to official data cited by Vozpopuli.

Mass migration from Colombia and Venezuela

The Social Security explained that, in the absence of seasonal adjustments, the total number of foreigners covered by social security is 2,671,546, with an increase of 39,953 in February 2024 and 205,303 in the last 12 months. On average, foreign workers represent 12.9% of all those affiliated with Social Security. Of these, 32.4% come from European Union countries, with the most numerous nationalities being those from Romania, Morocco, Colombia, Italy and Venezuela.

Although Romania and Morocco continue to be the main sources of foreign employees in Spain, the trend of employment abroad seems to be changing, and these two countries now remain in a secondary position. An analysis of data from February 2023 compared to February 2024 shows that a total of 14 countries have recorded a higher growth than Romania in the last 12 months. These include Colombia, Venezuela, Morocco, Italy, Peru, Honduras, Argentina, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, China, France and Ecuador. In the specific case of Romania, the difference between the number of social insurance affiliates registered in 2023 and that of 2024 is 1,768 new workers.
