Apple may adopt the RCS messaging standard, already implemented on several Android phones, starting in the fall of 2024, according to a banner that has now disappeared from the official Google Messages page.

In a now-defunct announcement on Google’s messaging app page, the company hinted that iPhones will eventually offer access to the RCS (“Rich Communication Services”) standard in the fall, according to TechCrunch.

Thus, the company would allow iPhone users to switch messages over the internetin one similar to the functionality offered by iMessage between Apple devices, with Android users. On the other hand, those with Android could send photo and video files in high quality to iPhones, directly through messages.

Description of the banner that disappeared from the site

“Apple has announced that it will adopt RCS in the fall of 2024. Once that happens, it will mean a better messaging experience for everyone.”

Google asked the other American tech giant as early as 2022 to resolve the “green versus blue bubbles” problem, referring to SMS usage with non-iOS phones vs. iMessage, through an entire campaign to promote the new messaging standard.

In the meantime, Samsung joined the same effort via a video last year, according to The Verge.

Even if the text bubbles will still be greenas the company confirmed to 9to5Mac, adopting RCS over SMS/MMS will benefit communication between Android and iOS devices.

It remains to be seen when Apple will make the announcement about the new messaging standard, given that it’s coming up at its June 2024 developer conference.
