Since the Pixel series debuted, Google has released two models almost every fall: a “standard” Pixel model and an “XL” or “Pro” model. The only exception is the Pixel 5, which came in a single variant, but at the time, the series was going through an identity crisis. Meanwhile, the Pixel phones have found their identity, with a unified design between generations, and in 2024 the tradition of the two models will be broken again with the introduction of a third model, in the style we’ve seen in the past from Apple and Samsung.
Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL could make up Google’s 2024 phone lineup
According to OnLeaks and 91mobiles, reliable sources when it comes to unreleased smartphones, the Pixel 9 series expected this fall will be released in three variants. We are talking about a “standard” Pixel 9, which will replace last year’s Pixel 8 model, a Pixel 9 Pro model, which will have similar dimensions but better hardware and just at the end we have the Pixel 9 Pro “XL”, a version larger, comparable to what we know from the past as the “Pro” model.
Basically, if you want all the advantages of a Pixel at the hardware level, such as a better screen, a zoom camera and the temperature sensor, you don’t necessarily have to buy the “pallet” version, with the largest screen, but you will also have a smaller version with a screen of about 6.1″.
91mobiles says the base model will have dimensions of 152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5mm, 6.03” screen, Tensor G4 processor and Qi2 wireless charging, just like the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The images show the new design directions we’ve also seen in previous leaks for the Pro variants, with a wide camera island on the back, straight iPhone-like edges, and straight glass panels on the front and on the back.
Most likely, the Pixel 9 will be priced at last year’s Pixel 8 while the Pro models will be more expensive. It’s unclear if the “standard” Pixel 9 Pro will come in at the price of the previous Pro model, or if it will be somewhere around half. If the price holds, it means the XL will be more expensive than last year’s flagship Pixel, likely topping $1,000 for the first time.
