The French president made strong proposals regarding the EU’s strategic autonomy, among which, to everyone’s surprise, the endowment with nuclear deterrence.
In front of the EU ambassadors invited to the Sorbonne and the legislative body in France and the heads of the army, Macron said that our values, our culture, are under threat and we are facing strategic choices.
Europe needs strategic autonomy.
“We have delegated energy to Russia, industry to China and defense to the United States. Ukraine is the condition of our security, so Russia must not win in Ukraine.
Russia doesn’t want to say what its limits are, so we don’t impose limits either,” said President Emmanuel Macron.
In fact, today Macron launches Defense Europe: “We must build the concept of strategic autonomy in the face of an adversary that has modified its technological advances in recent years and build a strong Defense Europe that is no longer vassal to the United States.
The rules of the game have changed, important transformations are now playing out.”
Macron invites European partners to sign a new pact that means turning the effort for Ukraine into a long-term effort, turning the European economy into a war economy, let’s produce faster and more in Europe, we need a European preference in buying material – no American or South Korean.
Macron proposes a European loan to invest in the arms industry. The French president also proposes a common cyber-security framework and especially, very importantly, the security framework that contains nuclear deterrence – so nuclear weapons for the European Union.
The European Union has no nuclear weapons. France has, but they are domestic, and the rest of nuclear weapons in Europe have the button in Washington.
It remains to be seen whether France will extend its nuclear umbrella over Europe or propose an entirely new construct for a European deterrent.
