In 2022, Romania had a total number of 96,705 enterprise groups, of which 93% were multinationals, most with German, French or American shareholders, and only a little over 6% were residents, according to the latest data published by National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Thus, of the 90,669 groups of multinational enterprises, 606 were controlled from within, and 90,063 from abroad.

Also, 14,553 are groups controlled by foreign legal persons, and 75,510 are groups controlled by foreign natural persons.

At the same time, 6,036 resident groups were active in Romania.

Regarding the field of activity, a third of the groups are from the trade sector, followed by those from construction (12%), professional, scientific and technical activities, as well as the manufacturing industry (each 10% of the total groups). Another 8% of the groups belong to the area of ​​real estate transactions.

The order is also maintained in the case of resident groups, where trade has a weight of 18%, constructions 11%, and manufacturing industry 10%.

Compared to the total number of employees in Romania, 30% of them work in multinational groups controlled from abroad, and 22% belong to groups controlled from the top 10 countries.

Depending on the share of the number of employees, the subgroups of enterprises controlled by legal entities or natural persons from Germany are on the first place (18.1%), on the second place are those controlled by France (11.2%), and on the three are controlled from the United States of America (9.3%).

In the case of groups with German shareholders, most employees are in the manufacturing industry (9.3%), wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3.3%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities (2.9%).

In groups with French shareholders, 4.5% of employees are in the manufacturing industry, 2.3% in commerce, and 1.4% in Information and communications.

Subgroups of controlled enterprises in the United States of America have the most employees in Manufacturing (3.8%) and Information and Communications (2.8%).

According to the INS, the multinational group consists of at least two legal units located in different countries, and the resident group is the group of enterprises whose legal units (enterprises) are all resident in the same country.
