In the village of Benic, commune of Galda de Jos, the inhabitants keep a tradition that is over 100 years old. On Easter day, they gather in the center of town and smash red eggs. It is an opportunity for good cheer, but also for socializing.

On Easter Sunday this year, about 50 people gathered after the church service in the center of the village, “at troiță”.

They came with little, with big, young people, children or older people. They brought baskets of red or painted eggs.

Then they started the “competition” of hitting eggs. Each villager collides the egg with another villager.

If he succeeds in breaking the other’s, he can claim it as his own. It is a real “race”, every year.

On this occasion, people send good thoughts and holiday messages, talk about what’s going on or make plans for the next period. They relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the free time and the celebration.

It is a time when the community comes together both to observe a local tradition and to celebrate Easter together.

This year’s gathering was also attended by Horea Marin, the bishop of the local church, who clashed eggs with the villagers.

After the Easter service and the one on the first day of Easter, the bright week begins. It is the beginning of a period of celebration, which ends fifty days after Easter at the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost).

Christians greet each other with “Christ is Risen!”/ “True is Risen”.
