Bucharest and Ilfov County together represent the region in Romania with the highest motorization rate of the population, the average being 640 cars per thousand inhabitants, a level close to most regions in France, Germany, Austria and Italy, according to Eurostat data for 2022 .

In the rest of Romania, the situation is different, however, in the center, west and north-west the percentage varies from 407 to 447 cars per 1000 inhabitants, and in the east and south from 315 to 393 cars.

Among the 10 European regions with the lowest motorization rate, two are in Romania, four in Greece, two in France and one each in Germany and Austria, respectively the Berlin and Vienna metropolitan areas.

At the opposite pole, the highest number of cars per thousand inhabitants are in Italy: Valle d’Aosta has an average of 2,339 vehicles/1000 inhabitants, the Province of Trento with 1431/1000 and Bolzano with 935/1000.

Of the 10 most motorized regions in Europe, 6 were in Italy and one each in Finland, Greece, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

The number of cars depends mostly on the economic conditions of the region, but also on certain specific circumstances, such as toll regulations.

As far as electric cars are concerned, in 2022 regions from the Netherlands and Sweden were the best, with average shares between 6.6% and 12.8% of all registered cars.

In the top 10 regions, four they are from the Netherlands, four from Sweden and one each from Luxembourg and Austria.

In contrast, seven regions in Greece and one each in the Czech Republic, Poland and Spain have zero percent electric cars in the total number of registered cars.

In Romania, the Bucharest-Ilfov area had a share of 0.79% of electric cars two years ago, the rest of the regions varying from 0.14% to 0.3%.
