European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Janusz Wojciechowski

The European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Janusz Wojciechowski, will be in Romania at the beginning of next week. On the agenda of the official from Brussels is also an extensive meeting with representatives of the Romanian agricultural sector, according to the information Agrointelligence – AGROINTEL.RO.

European Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowsk will make his first official visit to Romania on May 13-14, i.e. at the beginning of next week. With a few months left in his mandate, the official of the European Commission will come to discuss the problems faced by Romanian farmers right here in the country.

According to information Agrointelligence – AGROINTEL.RO, the meeting of the European commissioner with the representatives of the agricultural sector in Romania is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 14, in a formal setting. Certainly on the agenda of the official from Brussels there will be meetings with the Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, and with officials from the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture. It is expected that Janusz Wojciechowski, like other commissioners who have visited our country, will pay at least one visit to a farm, and as the official will visit Bucharest, most likely the farm or farms will be located close to Capital.

At the moment it is not clear whether the visit of European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski will also have a political component. Romania, like many other European states, entered the pre-election campaign for the European Parliament elections on June 9, and the Polish Wojciechowski is one of the most important EU commissioners from the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists, a political family from which, in this legislature, there is only one Romanian MEP – Cristian Terheș, AUR representative.

A commissioner with a tense mandate

We remind you that, in recent years, the European Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski was harshly criticized by Romanian farmers after, in several situations, he disadvantaged our country in the distribution of support ceilings from community funds. It even got to the point where the Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, asked Wojciechowski to do his duty towards the agricultural sector in Romania or “to all go home”. Wojciechowski’s mandate was marked by the situation created by the war in Ukraine, by a wave of farmers’ protests that took place at the beginning of this year, including in Romania, but also by the allocation of record support for Poland, his state, the commissioner often being accused of “playing” politically to the electoral pressures from him “at home”. In the last period, Wojciechowski fell into disgrace even in the political formation that supported him in Brussels and that asked him to resign.
