May 9, Europe Day

The date marks the anniversary of the historic moment represented by the “Schuman Declaration”, which proposed the idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would make war between the nations of Europe unthinkable. Robert Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union.

The statement made on May 9, 1950 by Robert Schuman, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, remained inscribed in the history of European construction as the “Schuman Declaration”. The text provided for the creation of a Community of coal and steel, whose members were to manage these two resources together.

The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), established by France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, was the first of a series of supranational European institutions that formed the basis of today’s European Union.

Historical context

In 1950, the nations of Europe were still struggling to overcome the disastrous consequences of World War II, which had ended in 1945.

The countries of Europe were determined to look for ways to avoid another war. They came to the conclusion that by pooling the production of coal and steel (according to the Declaration), a possible war between France and Germany, historical rivals, “would be not only unthinkable, but also impossible from a material point of view”, according to europa.eu.

Of course, the gathering of economic interests contributed to the increase of living standards and to the creation of a more united Europe. The possibility to join the CEEC was also offered to other countries.
